Policies and Procedures

Mission Statement

Campus Recreation serves as a vital and integral part of Student Life on campus. The mission of the department is to provide a broad spectrum of sports, recreation and leisure activities for students, staff and faculty, as well as members of the local community. The primary direction is to provide services and programs that stimulate growth, development and retention of students in a contemporary and safe environment that develops fitness and wellness, social interaction and leadership opportunities. The department seeks to promote healthy lifestyles and lifelong learning through the highest quality programs in the areas of recreation and wellness.

Eligibility

WNMU students, faculty and staff members are eligible to use all facilities free of charge. A current Mustang Card or W number must be presented to the staff member on duty in order to gain admittance. There will be a one-time exemption to enter without student ID.

Dependents of students, faculty and staff members are eligible to utilize the facilities by paying the Campus Rec fee and receiving a WNMU Dependent ID from Campus Card Services. The dependent fee can be paid at the WNMU Card Service Office.

Community members may gain access to the facilities by purchasing a Mustang Card from Card Services and will be informed one swipe before there last usage of the facility.

Equipment such as basketballs, volleyballs and other equipment can be checked out through a C-Rec staff member located in the Fitness Center. Upon checkout, a Mustang Card must be presented to the staff member on duty. The Mustang Card will be returned once the equipment has been returned.

Participation Agreement

Participation in Western New Mexico University (WNMU) Brancheau Physical Education Complex (PEC) and other Recreation programs are on a voluntary participation basis and carry various degrees of risk or injury. Participants assume sole responsibility for any and all such risk or injury that may result due to voluntary participation. It is the individual’s responsibility to be knowledgeable of his/her own physical condition and/or have a physical examination prior to participation. Inform the staff at the desk of any medical conditions for which they may need to be aware. WNMU does not provide personal accident/health insurance; therefore, members are recommended to secure their own insurance.

The use of University or state property for personal monetary gain is not permitted; this includes but is not limited to personal training.

Policies and Procedures

Following is the list of general rules and regulations for the use of Campus Recreation Center. Violating these policies or any other actions that infringe upon the well-being of other users may result in, suspension of membership and denied access to the facility.

Clothing:

  • Appropriate athletic attire such as warm-up suits, T-shirts, athletic shorts/pants, yoga pants, are required. Trousers with rivets are not permitted.
  • Tank tops should fully cover back, sides and midriff area.
  • Patrons are requested to wear clothing that does not contain obscene and/or offensive words/pictures.
  • Appropriate footwear is required for each activity area.
  • Closed-toe athletic shoes with non-marking/streaking are required in all the facilities except for yoga/mind-body classes.
  • Cleats/spikes are not allowed on any surface in PEC
  • Any shoes that contain excess dirt, mud and/or grease will not be permitted on any floor in PEC.

Alcohol and Tobacco Use

  • Alcoholic beverages are not allowed on the premises.
  • Consumption of alcoholic beverages and illegal drugs prior to or while using the facility, will be reason for expulsion and possible exclusion from further Campus Recreation Services.
  • Smoking and the use of all tobacco products are prohibited.

Food and Drink

  • Gum chewing and spitting are not permitted in any facility.
  • Food and drinks are not allowed inside the facilities.
  • No glass or metal containers are allowed.
  • Water, in plastic containers with re-sealable caps is allowed.
  • Rule of Thumb: If it tips over, there cannot be a possibility of it spilling.

Bicycles, Skates, and Outside Equipment

  • Bicycles, Skateboards and Inline Skates are not allowed in the PEC.
  • Bicycle racks are located outside for your convenience, please do not park them inside the building.
  • Bicycles left for more than a couple of days in the racks will be referred to Campus Police for removal.
  • Boom boxes are not allowed in the PEC except those used for Office of Campus Recreation programs. Individual headphones are permissible. C-Rec will not be responsible for any lost or stolen items.
  • Football, softball, frisbee or other activities that involve projecting items through the air are not permitted in the IM gym or fitness center unless handled by a C-Rec professional staff member.
  • Campus Recreation Staff has the right to prohibit any outside fitness equipment.

Locker Rooms

  • All personal articles must be kept in designated lockers, not on activity room floors, courts or other surfaces.
  • Locker rooms may be used for storing personal items, changing attire and showering.
  • Day-use lockers are available at no extra cost for the members.
  • Campus Recreation is not responsible for theft or damage in Lockers.
  • Lockers are inspected daily at closing and any dry, non-perishable items will be placed in lost and found to be collected.

Lost and Found

  • C-Rec is not responsible for lost or stolen articles.
  • Staff members are not allowed to hold valuables or bags for participants and will not be responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • Found items should be turned in at the Customer Service desk.
  • Any items found which appear to be of significant monetary value will be stored safely. Those items can be claimed the following day at the C-Rec Office with a proper photo ID. Valuables will be stored for two weeks and then given to Campus Police for disposal.
  • Coats and other items of clothing will also be stored for two weeks and then given to Campus Police for disposal.

Family & Child Policies

  • For health and safety reasons, children ages 0 – 16 are not permitted at any time in the Fitness Center; this area of the facility is not designed to be used by children.
  • Infants may not be left in carriers while their guardian exercises nearby.
  • Carriages/strollers are not permitted in the Intramural Gym.
  • Children must be at least 16 years of age to utilize the Campus Rec facilities.
  • All children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult or legal guardian to gain admittance into the Campus Rec facilities and must always be chaperoned while in the facility.
  • WNMU students, faculty, and staff may purchase memberships for their dependents. Each dependent will need to get a Mustang Card from the Office of Card Services.
  • Children are never to be left unattended, even in the lobby.
  • Racquetball goggles are required for children under the age of 18 who utilize the racquetball courts.

Behavior and Personal Safety

  • Participants are expected to be courteous to other facility users and employees and to follow the rules, policies and safety instructions outlined by Campus Recreation.
  • Patrons are expected to display acceptable social behavior while recreating in any of the Campus Recreation facilities.
  • Facility users who engage in behavior or actions that might damage equipment or facilities or pose a threat to the safety and wellbeing of themselves or others may lose their privileges.
  • Abuse of staff in any form is not tolerated and will result in expulsion and exclusion for a period deemed appropriate by management.
  • Vulgar, obscene, abusive, derogatory or demeaning comments and gestures are not consistent with a positive environment and could lead to loss of privileges.
  • Not all rules are posted. If staff ask your cooperation, please adjust your behavior and make a recommendation to management at a later date for changes you feel might be necessary.
  • Cell phones, tablets and other devices may be used throughout the facility; however, photography of any type is prohibited in the locker rooms.
  • Uncooperative patrons will be asked to leave the facilities and excluded from its use until deemed appropriate by Campus Recreation.
  • The Office of Campus Recreation reserves the right to take whatever action necessary to preserve the safety and integrity of facilities and programs.
  • Fighting is not tolerated and will result in immediate expulsion from the facilities. Lack of cooperation will result in Campus Police being involved.
  • Firearms are prohibited.
  • Please help maintain a secure environment by watching your valuables carefully and notifying staff if you see something out of the ordinary.
  • When using the facilities, please consider your own health history, seek counsel from your health provider, and use common sense. In case of an accident or illness, notify a C-Rec employee immediately. Your assistance promoting safety is greatly appreciated.
  • Participation is at your own personal risk. Please be Safe and be a Sport.

Entrance and Exit Doors

  • All entrances and exits to the Brancheau Physical Education Center must be through the main lobby unless there is an emergency.

Cardio and Strength Equipment

  • During your time, please be respectful of others and limit your workout time to 30 min during rush hours.
  • Proper usage as determined and designed by the manufacturer is required.
  • Do not grab electronic consoles; use the handlebars.
  • Do not steeply incline the treadmills, grasp the handle and lean back on your routine. This is inappropriate and tears up the equipment.
  • Please wipe down the equipment before and after use with provided disinfectant wipes.
  • Use cubbies for personal items or the free day-lockers provided for your convenience.
  • Keep hands and feet clear of moving parts while machine is in use. Place hands and feet only on the hand grips and foot pads provided.
  • Please use machines and equipment only for their intended purpose.
  • Use appropriate stacks of weights and settings on the strength training equipment to match your ability.
  • Do not drop weights.
  • Stack weights properly after use. Refusing to do so, if asked by a staff, will result in expulsion from the facilities for no less than one week.
  • Do not operate equipment if it has loose or damaged parts. If machine fails to operate correctly, do not attempt to repair. Notify the staff member at the customer service desk of the problem.
  • Participants exercise at their own risk, and they are responsible for their own health and safety.
  • Do not stand or place feet on benches.
  • No equipment is to be moved from its designated area.

Pets

  • No pets are permitted in the Brancheau Physical Education Complex unless it is a registered service dog or trained seeing-eye dog.
  • The owner should be prepared to properly display the service animal’s credentials.

Pool Policies & Procedures

The following policies and procedures have been set up to serve participants and ensure that the Campus Recreation pool is a safe and enjoyable environment.

Sign-In

Participates are required to swipe in at the staff desk prior to pool access.

Utilization

The C-Rec Pool is for the use of Western New Mexico University currently enrolled students, faculty, staff and paying community members. All users must present a current Mustang Card in order to gain access to the swimming pool.

Attire

Commercial swimsuits are to be worn by participants. Cut-off jeans and other makeshift suits will not be permitted. Shoes are not allowed in the pool area.

Personal Belongings

C-Rec is not responsible for personal articles left in the pool area. Lockers are available for day use. The lockers are for temporary use only and must be emptied at the end of each day. Refer to our locker rooms section for more details on lockers.

General pool policies

  • The pool closes 15 minutes prior to fitness facility’s closing.
  • Shower before entering the pool and after use of toilet.
  • You must be at least 16 years of age to use the pool.
  • Swimming aids are restricted to eye goggles.
  • Persons with severe cuts, open sores, rashes, skin eruptions or known communicable diseases are not permitted in the pool.
  • No diving in the pool.
  • No pushing, shoving or horseplay.
  • No chewing gum, food/drink and tobacco use.
  • Pool equipment is available for check out. Please use equipment properly and return to proper place when finished.
  • Profanity, abusive language or flagrant behavior will not be tolerated at any time. Persistent use of such behavior will result in forfeiture of utilization privileges.
  • When wet, exit and enter the pool through the designated wet path.
  • During high usage times, please share your swim lane with other swimmers.
  • Lap lanes cannot be reserved and are to be utilized on a first come first serve basis. We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.

Intramural Gym Usage

  • No tape or marking on gym floors or walls.
  • Do not move any equipment already set up on the courts. Ask the staff member on duty for information regarding the daily activities.
  • Gyms are intended for basketball, volleyball, and badminton. Other activities must be approved by the staff member on duty.
  • Hanging on the rims or nets is prohibited due to the risk of injury and potential damage to the equipment.
  • No personal items are allowed on the playing floor. Place items in the day lockers provided for your convenience.
  • Shirts are required in all activity areas of the facility. Shirts vs. skins games are prohibited
  • Proper athletic shoes are always required. No street shoes or black marking soles allowed.
  • Glass bottles are not permitted in the facility.
  • Facility doors are not to be propped open.

Racquetball Court Usage

  • Only non-marking athletic shoes are permitted on the courts.
  • It is highly recommended that players wear eye protection while playing.
  • Only four players are allowed on a court at a time.
